Call for Proposals FY09 Jupiter Laser Facility User Program
The FY09 Jupiter Laser Facility (JLF) User Program will comprise two components: Programmatic Research and Basic Science Research. The Programmatic component is open to all LLNL applicants while the Basic Science component is open to LLNL Laboratory Directed Research & Development-Lab Wide (LDRD-LW) applicants and academic applicants from U.S. and international universities.
All five laser platforms, Titan, Janus, Callisto, Europa and COMET, will be available to users in FY09 (subject to funding). Details of the lasers can be found on the jlf.llnl.gov web site. 70% of the available laser time will be dedicated to Programmatic Research and 30% to Basic Science Research.
Research topics pertinent to this call fall broadly within laser-matter interactions of interest to the emerging field of High Energy Density science.
All proposals, programmatic or basic science, will be peer-reviewed by a JLF Program Advisory Committee using the same merit-based system. Members of the Committee are selected by the Jupiter Laser Facility Board of Directors to include three LLNL scientists and three external scientists. Additional assessment of proposals will be solicited from external referees.
While users will not be charged for laser time, they are required to provide their own resources for experimental work force, targets and diagnostics (except for the VISARs at JLF). Those interested in research and graduate student funding administered by the Institute for Laser Science & Applications (ILSA) should consult ilsa.llnl.gov.
Prior to the preparation of proposals, applicants should review all user policies and procedures detailed in the Policies and Procedures menu on the left. As a part of the JLF safety policy, each team must identify a LLNL research collaborator with the appropriate technical expertise and work experience at Jupiter Laser Facility to act as the Responsible Individual to provide all necessary administrative leadership for the team. Applicants needing assistance to engage a suitable Responsible Individual should contact Andrew Ng, Scientific Director, Jupiter Laser Facility.
All proposals are to be submitted using the FY09 Jupiter Laser Facility User Program Proposal Form. A template of the form and further instructions can be downloaded here. Each proposal must be delivered as a single pdf file using the JLF User Program Proposal Form to Andrew Ng, Scientific Director, Jupiter Laser Facility by April 1, 2008. Decisions on laser time allocation will be announced beginning July 1, 2008 and no later than August 1, 2008. After the proposal/decision process, a JLF User Workshop in mid-August will be provided for all interested JLF users. Details to follow.
